From 1934 to today

Our birth and evolution

Riseria di Vespolate S.p.A. was born from the entrepreneurial will of Pietro and Arnaldo Colombara, who in the years 1934-35 decided to combine their savings and purchase the first mill in Vespolate (NO), thus laying the foundations for the future Riseria di Vespolate; its growth continues and in November 1948 the Riseria di Vespolate becomes a joint-stock company, with its registered office in Milan. In 1955, among the first in Italy, the company began to pack part of the rice produced: from this moment the rise of the company is constant and in the Sixties about 50% of production is exported to many countries of the Community European.

In 1965, against the renewed needs of expansion, the rice mill was transferred from Vespolate to Novara, in the current headquarters in via Gattico 3.

This is a point of departure rather than of arrival, since in the new structure the production increases, the technologies are further perfected and other perspectives of rice use are studied. In 1972, a parboiling plant was built in the Novara plant: this process allows the consistency, appearance, taste, mineral salts and vitamins contained in the rice to be maintained by steaming before the paddy rice undergoes hair treatment.

Producing more and better means using state-of-the-art technology, for which in 1980 a part of the plants were renewed and refined machinery was introduced with optical instruments for the automatic selection of rice grains.

In order to improve production and offer a product of undisputed quality, in 1993 the production sector is computerized, so as to optimize plant management.

As evidence of the capacity and competence in the sector, among one of the first in Italy, in 2000 Riseria di Vespolate obtained the ISO 9002 certificate. Furthermore, as a demonstration of the search for continuous improvement, the corporate management software system was completely redesigned and implemented in compliance with the company mission, which provides for a greater commitment to product quality, developing the entire system in compliance with the laws and directives in force and in particular with the UNI EN ISO 9001: 2000 standard, to which the Riseria di Vespolate has chosen to join.
Over the years, and with the introduction of new EU laws and regulations, increasing attention for international customers who are very sensitive to standards and product-centered demands, corporate attention has been focused on food safety, thus aiming at continuous research of systems, equipment and controls to guarantee the healthiness of the product. So Riseria di Vespolate has adopted the strictest international food safety standards, following the principles and guidelines of BRC (British Retail Consortium) and IFS (International Food Standard), and focusing all production in compliance with these safety standards, certifying itself as a company at the highest level of security in both standards.
